This Blog is intended to share the creation of a tiny home Skoolie named Margarit, and inspire all those who enter to manifest their wildest dreams into creation even if you have no clue how you'll begin to make it happen.
When I was younger, I thought that my dream of living in a bus would one day come to life. At some point, I lost that hope, and thought to myself "That's a dream I will have to put out of my head and focus on more important things." As I grew up a bit more, I realized that growing up doesn't have to mean giving up on the excitement and dreams I felt as a child and young creative open person. And even better than that-my dreams are awesome and make so much sense!
There has been an incredible influx of people deciding to build themselves tiny homes since the recession. When I share about building a tiny home in a school bus some people laugh. "Why would you do that?" Some folks even think I am joking. Well, there are SO many great reasons that people build tiny homes including; expensive building permits for traditional houses, efficiency of small spaces, lack of funds for purchasing property but wanting their own space, wanting to live more simply, rearranging priorities in a mixed up capitalistic world...etc etc etc. I don't know much about everyone else, but here are some of my reasons.
1. Landlord, I'm tired of paying your mortgage. I'm done dumping money into someone else's home. For the kind of place I want to live in (which is minimal) I can easily pay 13-16 grand a year. And at the end of the year...that money is gone from my life, and I've probably moved out of that home. I also have no ownership over the homes I've rented, and because of that I feel less inclined to put money, time, and energy into the home. I've moved SO much and so damn often. I've had a strong desire to create home, but have felt no ownership and feel that I have no creative license over the place I live. With a Skoolie (a tiny home built inside a school bus) I can move my home wherever I want without having to really pack up, so I don't uproot my whole home if I move around.
2. I want to save money for my own place one day. By living in the bus, I will be able to save money each month to add to my savings, or take a trip, or take dance classes....or, or...or...Anything else we want. Freedom is the key here. The bus is an asset that one day I will be able to have as a guest house, art studio, rent it, sell it...you get it.
3. I'm a romantic and want to live in a gypsy wagon. Plain and simple, I like the picture of me in my magic school bus making sauerkraut and macrame wall hangings. What can I say? I've got a thing for the good old days.
4. I am ready to make my dreams come true! This is a long standing dream of mine. I got tired of putting off dreams for the future. I'm not growing younger, I've got energy to do it, and I don't have kids yet (which doesn't entirely matter but this is a great time to make this dream happen). This is going to be an epic part of my story, and I'm ready to make my best life ever happen!
5. I get to learn how to take things apart, use tools, and build! I have already learned SO much just by asking questions, getting help from my awesomely brilliant and creative dad, and doing extensive research online. When I bought the bus I had no idea what needed to happen except that we needed to start by taking out the seats from the bus. I now have an understanding of the way the next steps need to go, and I will be moving along steadily by doing research, asking questions, and learning some valuable skills that I have wanted for a long time.
6. I want to live more simply. I don't like having a lot of stuff and things. It feels like a burden to me. I like to have things that serve a purpose and have beauty. Living simply in a tiny home allows for even more focus on what's important in life and clarity on what isn't.
